DENVER (4 HOURS FROM NYC)
Yes, the Mile High City is a mecca for all things outdoorsy, but there’s also incredible food, great shopping (be sure to hunt for treasures on Antique Row) and a booming creative scene, centered in the formerly industrial, now mural-adorned RiNo Art District. And at $157 roundtrip, think of all the extra money you’ll have to spend on burritos.
MEMPHIS (3 HOURS FROM NYC)
We’ll admit we might have been extra inspired by that gorgeous episode of This Is Us, but the southern city should be on your radar for its unique intersection of history, music and food. (We spotted flights for just $175.) Catch live blues on Beale Street, learn the history of a movement at the National Civil Rights Museum and feast on ribs at Central BBQ. (Oh, you can also stay at Elvis’s guest house, if you’re into that sort of thing.).
QUEBEC CITY (2 HOURS FROM NYC)
Montreal, while lovely, is practically old hat to New Yorkers, but head farther north for gorgeously preserved 400-year-old architecture (and the castle-like Château Frontenac), cobblestone streets and cuisine that’s a mash-up of French and local influences—not to mention some of the continent’s best cheese. Flights are currently clocking in at just over 200 bucks, so allons-y.
STOCKHOLM (7.5 HOURS FROM NYC)
Attention: You can currently fly to the land of minimalist design, catchy pop tunes and page-turning thrillers for what it usually costs to get to L.A. (around $350). Gawk at the medieval architecture in Gamala Stan (Old Town) or head to the hip Södermalm neighborhood to check out Fotografiska, a massive photography center.
LIMA (7.5 HOURS FROM NYC)
OK, while “cheap” here may be relative, anything under $500 to the Peruvian hub is a steal. And it’s much more than a requisite stopover en route to Machu Picchu: It’s become a serious culinary destination, both for insanely fresh seafood at casual cevicherias, cutting-edge cuisine from hot-shot chefs (like Central, which recently made an appearance on Chef’s Table) and—thanks to a diverse population—unique (and delicious) hybrid cuisines like Chinese-Peruvian chifa and Japanese-Peruvian nikkei.
